Create a horse

This page is for creating your first horses, free of charge. The number of horses you have left is shown above the form: each time you create a horse, that number decreases by one, and it does not reset. Once you’ve used them all up, you’ll need to buy horses from other players or breed them yourself.

A horse you’ve created will never leave your stable: it cannot be sold or given away, unlike a horse you’ve purchased or bred yourself. And none of the characteristics listed below can be changed later. So take your time choosing.

The Name

Maximum of twenty characters. A randomly generated name is suggested when you open the page ; the button to the right of the field generates another one, as many times as you like.

The name must be unique within your stable: you cannot have two horses with the same name at the same time, but nothing prevents another player from having a horse with the same name.

Age

On Sulkyland, one real-world month equals one horse year. Your horse turns one year old on the 1st of each month, and retires at sixteen years of age—that is, sixteen months after its birth.

Choosing 1 year means taking the horse at birth: its entire career lies ahead, and all its training remains to be done.

Choosing 2, 3, or 4 years means receiving a horse born two, three, or four months earlier, which the program has trained for you since birth. It will be ready to race faster, but there are two things to keep in mind: since its retirement always comes sixteen months after its birth, you’ll have that much less of its career left; and training managed by the program is less effective than training you conduct yourself.

Gender

Male, female, or gelding. This choice has no effect on racing ability, but it determines what the horse will be able to do later on: a gelding will never breed. If breeding appeals to you, don’t make it your only choice.

Breeding isn’t an option right away anyway. A mare doesn’t foal until she’s three years old: you can schedule the breeding earlier; the foal will simply wait until its mother reaches that age to be born. For stallions, it depends on the world you’re playing in: on Chorus, a stallion can breed starting at age three, and a horse created there immediately receives a stock of ten breedings; on Almina, there is no initial allocation; available breedings accumulate as the horse ages.

Specialty

Flat, steeplechase, or trotting. There are no breeds on Sulkyland, only these three specialties, and a horse races only in its own. This choice therefore determines the types of races in which you can enter the horse throughout its career.

Coat Color

The arrows on either side of the photo let you scroll through the eighteen available coat colors. The coat color has no effect on the horse’s abilities.

You can later customize your horse’s profile with a photo of your choice, but the colors under which it races will remain those of the coat selected here.

Once the horse is created

It immediately joins your stable, and you are its owner, trainer, jockey, and breeder all at once. It’s then up to you to decide whether to keep all four roles or entrust the training or riding to another player.

If you have more creations left, a link lets you continue ; otherwise, “see all my horses” takes you to your stable.
